We had a new assignment lately for one of our courses. For this assignment, our group designed an AI-enhanced, corpus-based teaching material and an ASSURE-model lesson for high school prepatory students. We chose to focus on phrasal verbs because they are both essential and challenging for students, especially when it comes to understanding how they are used in real contexts. As a group, we wanted to create something interactive, technology-rich, and grounded in authentic language use.
We began by preparing a short text that naturally included the target phrasal verbs. Then we added a short 5-question multiple-choice activity to test students’ initial understanding. One of our favorite parts of the design was the corpus component: students search the phrasal verbs in a corpus, study the first ten example sentences, and write two comments about how each verb is used.
To support students further, we created an AI-generated instructional video using a notebook LM tool. The video explains the correct usage of the phrasal verbs and helps students confirm their observations. Finally, we developed a worksheet where students fill in the blanks with appropriate phrasal verbs and then check their answers using the corpus. If they make mistakes, they can request feedback from AI, which encourages autonomy.
While designing the material, we realized how effective corpus-based learning can be in making vocabulary instruction more meaningful. However, we also discussed possible challenges: some students might struggle with navigating the corpus, weaker learners may find authentic examples difficult, and technical issues like slow internet could interrupt the flow. Despite these potential problems, we believe our material offers a rich and engaging experience that can help students truly understand phrasal verbs in real usage.
