This week, I had a unique experience using an AI tool to make a conversation with Professor Noam Chomsky about Universal Grammar. At first, I was a bit nervous because the topic is quite complex. However, the AI answered my questions in a way that was clear and easy to follow. It helped me understand how language is learned, especially by children, and how Universal Grammar plays an important role in this process.
One thing that stood out to me was how the AI used real examples to explain difficult ideas. For example, when I asked why children can learn grammar without being directly taught, the AI said that children often say things like “I goed” instead of “I went.” This helped me understand how children create their own grammar rules. The AI gave similar examples throughout the chat, which made the information more memorable and meaningful for me.
Writing the report afterward was also part of the learning process. I had to summarize what I learned and include direct quotes. Then I submitted the report to an AI feedback tool, which gave me suggestions on how to improve my writing. It told me to avoid repeating phrases like “AI said” and to expand certain points like second language learning. I revised my report based on this feedback, which made it more complete and academic. This step helped me improve both my writing and critical thinking.
From a teaching perspective, I can see how AI tools like this could be very useful in the classroom. Students could use them to explore different topics, practice asking questions, or receive feedback on their writing. It could also be a fun way to make abstract or difficult concepts easier to understand. For example, learners can “interview” famous figures or experts through AI, which makes the lesson feel more personal and interactive.
However, there are also some drawbacks to using AI. Not all students may know how to use it effectively, and sometimes the answers might be too advanced or too simplified. Also, AI doesn’t replace the role of a teacher who can guide students and understand their emotions and learning needs.
Overall, this project showed me that AI can be a powerful tool in language learning if used carefully. As a future English teacher, I would like to use AI in combination with traditional methods to support students’ development in both understanding and using language.
